MA
In Japanese, this term does not mean emptiness but the space in between, the interval that first allows what acts between things to emerge: the pause between two notes, the distance between two lines, the nothingness that lets a form become a form. In architecture, it is an active, designed space that gives things their meaning and structure. The joint exhibition by Marcell Naubert and Nándor Angstenberger follows this principle: two artistic languages that do not seek to complement one another but enter into relation within the space between them.
Marcell Naubert draws lines: endless line drawings in ink that seem to question themselves. A movement that continues to write itself, without goal and without end. In his more recent works, he cuts these lines apart and weaves them back together. What was once a continuous trace is dismantled, knotted and rearranged. The drawing leaves the surface and becomes a fabric, a structure that visibly carries within it the time and destruction of its former surface.
Nándor Angstenberger works primarily in three dimensions, with objects. Architectural forms and proliferations of everyday materials that condense into idiosyncratic bodies. Dyed sugar cubes become towers and city skylines, fragile, bodily architectures that retain their objecthood even where they shift into the plane.
Both bodies of work share an attitude: trust in process, in repetition, in material as an independent agent. Line and object, paper and sugar, ink and watercolor do not appear as commentaries on one another, but as autonomous movements in the same space. What arises between them, the distance, the pause, the open view from one work to the next, is MA.
