On Authorship, Failure, and Openness in the Artistic Process“I could do that.” — a phrase that repeatedly surfaces in the reception of contemporary art. It suggests that artistic works are easily reproducible. Yet the ironic remark “I could do that. Yeah, but you didn’t.” captures the point: art is more than technique or choice of motif.It comes into being through the act itself — through decisions, through risk, through the responsibility of actually realizing a work, and through the ability to engage with an open process. Between innovation, genius, wishful thinking, good intentions, megalomania, and failure lies the Luftschloss, the castle in the air. According to common belief, architects of such castles have, quite literally, lost the ground beneath their feet. Their projects are too large, too expensive, technically unfeasible, simply unheard of. Real construction projects, too, can turn into (temporary) castles in the air when their realization triggers an escalation of costs and time, sometimes with an open-ended outcome. Evidence of this can be found in construction pits that have turned into biotopes and in never-completed investment ruins which, often appearing as skeletal remains, have transformed from castles in the air into ghost houses.Yet these visions should by no means be underestimated, for plans, dreams, flights of fancy, and cloud-cuckoo-lands harbor great power, and something new emerges above all when one attempts to bring what is actually impossible into the world after all. It is therefore high time to dedicate an exhibition to castles in the air and their architects, one that approaches the subject from cultural-studies, artistic, and playful perspectives. Layer by layer the material grows, line upon line; paper on paper, with paper, from fabric and dyed sugar cubes. These surfaces arise from continuous placement, from repetition, from expansion. Rhythm structures drawing and object, not as order, but as a persistent process. The works are expansive and intense; they fill the space through the multitude of their individual elements. And yet, within this density, a mental state opens up a point of concentrated perception that is based not on reduction, but on continuity. Between repetition and silence, a &ldquo;state zero&rdquo; emerges, neither beginning nor end, but a lingering in the present.

DIE BLAUE NACHT, Historische Felsengänge, Nürnberg 2022

Starting my residency at the Künstlerhaus Lukas in April 2022, located at the Baltic seaside resort Ahrenshoop, one of the oldest art colonies in Germany dating back to 1892. I am revisiting my time after my first residency at the same artist house 19 years ago. Comparing the developement in this tiny village from now to the sleepy and very comfortable time i spent in 2003, it is obvious that time and money, a lot of money did some serious damage to the beautiful Ahrenshoop in many ways. Real estate prices sky rocketed followed by a complete sell out to investors. This lead also to ridiculous architectonical contructions, it doesn´t matter what kind of substructure was made, they always put at the end a thatched roof on it believing that nobody would recognize the obvious mistake. Taste is sometimes a matter of history and not of spending money. In the year 2003, I took pictures inside of the already locked down Kurhaus Ahrenshoop by entering it illegally and capturing the decay of an once famous spa house in the GDR. Sadly this building got demolished in 2008 and got replaced by a new and modern faceless spa house. These pictures will be the starting point for a new series of work dealing with this topic.

After one month staying at the Gil Residency in Akureyri, Iceland, I finish the residency with an exhibition at the Deiglan Gallery. The exhibiton is a collaboration with digital drawings by Marcell Naubert, Berlin, Germany. Opening on Friday, October 29th from 4 pm - 9 pm, and the following day Saturday, October 30th from 2 pm - 8 pm Gallery Deiglan, Kaupvangstræti 23, Akureyri One of the basis of human beings is making mistakes, because out of mistakes we learn essential techniques of mastering daily life and for our whole lifespan in general. But as we know life is sometimes complicated, mankind has a comfortable side, even shows some signs of laziness, that is why we invented machines for helping us. A computer is as good as a programmer who created the computer software, and to quote my brother who is a programmer: “a computer never makes mistakes, only humans are making mistakes”. Again a lesson learned. Even more, evolution aside, it makes us helpless when suddenly a System Error Code shows up on the screen and no uncontrollable hacking on the keyboard seems to solve the problem. But how lucky we are, we have Google. Equipped with the wisdom of a god and faster than the speed of light. But how far has it come? Is it a failing of our technology or a failing of our mankind? The exhibition “Error Code” at the Deiglan Gallery, a first time collaboration with Marcell Naubert shows another side of this development, experiencing and making mistakes are a necessity to human beings, beauty and sensitivity lies in it and should be appreciated regardless the direction mankind is heading right now, to irrelevant perfection.

August 2021 Augmented Reality: Ross Alexander Payne und Lupus Siegert Digital sculptures: MSHR, Asdrúbal Gómez, Aujik und Lupus Siegert What if the Bärenzwinger was left still and empty for 100 years? Drawing from this thought, the exhibition "Cat's Cradle" deals not only with what was, but with what is or could be. The different times of the site are visualised in the form of fine cobwebs spun between metal, thick dust wool on concrete and brown streaks drawn through the mortar. Nándor Angstenberger allows the Bärenzwinger’s architecture and its surrounding nature in the outdoor enclosures to intertwine. A new organism comes into being that inserts itself into its environment and becomes a part of it. The white-yarn installation is reminiscent of the numerous spider webs that were already present at the site. At the same time, this organism blocks the way and new paths must be sought attentively. Something else is nestled here,nsomething that at first glance is not visible. Among the stones and under the branches of the elder tree, there are virtual sculptures. These are on loan from the artists MSHR, Asdrúbal Gómez, Aujik and Lupus Siegert, and are part of an augmented reality composition that the collective Salon Oblique developed for the Bärenzwinger. Via a tablet, the virtual sculptures become visible in the outdoor area of the Bärenzwinger. This work also encourages unknown directions to be taken and a renewed exploration of the site. It is about strengthening and connecting the existing and the new. Just because something is not immediately visible, does not mean that it is not there. With the imagined vacancy of the former bear pit, there is a growing understanding and feeling for the existing space and the responsibility we all share for it. The works enter into a dialogue with one another and with the natural environment of the site. Through their networking and interlinking, they together embody the intention to promote a common becoming-with. The exhibition "Cat's Cradle" is the second in the Bärenzwinger’s annual programme Bricolage, a series researching the less visible present and history of Bärenzwinger.
