On Authorship, Failure, and Openness in the Artistic Process
“I could do that.” — a phrase that repeatedly surfaces in the reception of contemporary art. It suggests that artistic works are easily reproducible. Yet the ironic remark “I could do that. Yeah, but you didn’t.” captures the point: art is more than technique or choice of motif.
It comes into being through the act itself — through decisions, through risk, through the responsibility of actually realizing a work, and through the ability to engage with an open process. It is not the capacity to do something, but the doing that makes art.
The exhibition “I Could Do That.” is dedicated to this very tension. It brings together works in various media — painting, drawing, installation, and object — presenting both finished pieces and works in states of incompletion.
All participating artists present several recent works, creating both a vivid overview of their practice and opening up spaces for the provisional, the experimental, and the process-oriented.
